UNESCO World Heritage sites of Morocco

UNESCO World Heritage of Morocco recognizes its history and culture. But also a stimulus for its conservation and exploitation in tourism. Therefore, we collect in this post the 9 sites recognized as such today, which in turn are part of our circuits in Morocco.

Medina of Fes

UNESCO World Heritage sites of Morocco are considered one of the largest medinas in the Arab world. In its walled enclosure, important monuments are preserved, which take us back, especially to its time of splendor: the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Marrakech Medina

Marrakech Medina Another of the great medinas of the country. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Morocco because its interior houses such important buildings as the Koutoubia mosque and the explosion of life inside, a large souk in the eyes of visitors.

Historic City of Meknes

Thanks to Sultan Mulay Ismail, the Historic City of Meknes, an imperial city for a brief period in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, retains magnificent monuments of that period, such as the Bab-el Mansour Gate.

Medina of Essaouira

Medina of Essaouira, one of the jewels of the Moroccan Atlantic coast, in its nomination, its Portuguese footprint was especially valued since a good part of the constructions are due to the period of Portuguese domination. Its most famous monument is the fort or Skala du Port, but the protection and recognition of Unesco is the whole medina.

Medina of Tetouan

Medina of Tetouan. The ‘white city’, often called, is a beautiful surprise for those traveling through northern Morocco. Its old town shows a powerful Andalusian influence because it was largely rebuilt by Muslims expelled from the Iberian Peninsula.

Rabat, modern capital and historic city

Rabat is a modern capital and historic city. This curious recognition of Unesco mentions not only the monuments and ancient vestiges, such as the Hassan Tower (12th century) but also the ‘ville novella, one of the most extensive projects of architectural modernism in Morocco and throughout Africa. Examples of the latter are the Jardin d’Essais, the Royal Palace, and the Bank of Morocco, among others.

Other World Heritage Sites of Morocco

  • Ait Ben Haddou: from the list of World Heritage Sites in Morocco, is the only representative of a typical building typology of the country’s south: the adobe-fortress villages on the caravan routes. It has been a set of cinema in great Hollywood movies.
  • Mazagan Citadel is another good example of the Portuguese and Moroccan symbiosis, in this case, with a citadel with late Gothic (Manueline Gothic) and Renaissance elements.
  • The archaeological site of Volubilis: Although it is not the only Roman archaeological site in the country, it is the largest, most spectacular, and best preserved. Not in vain was the capital of Mauritania Tingitana. Proof of this is some of its main vestiges, such as remains of the Jupiter Capitoline temple or the Arc of Triomphe of Caracalla.

As you can see, nine places are listed as UNESCO World Heritage of Morocco and we invite you to meet with us in the circuits we organize. They will surprise you!
